The woman finished placing her order and waited patiently at the bar, casting her long lashes down as if she were uncomfortable with all the people surrounding her, especially the drunken idiots sitting at the bar next to her. The guy closest to the end leaned backward as he laughed hard at something his buddy said. I watched in disgust as he lost his balance and began to fall sideways off his stool. In the process, he slammed into the beauty standing next to him, causing her to lose her balance. She reached out to try to grab onto something, but her flailing arms found nothing but air. Instinctively, I reached out and caught her around the waist and pulled her toward me and away from him. She was such a light little thing I inadvertently lifted her onto my lap. She landed on my thighs with a little ‘umph’ as she grabbed my waist for balance. Unable to help myself, I inhaled her sweet scent - almost like vanilla with a touch of cinnamon; not like that strong, sense-clogging perfume used by so many of the women I knew.

“Whoa, you okay there?” I asked her.

“Oh, my gosh! I’m so sorry…” She stopped talking as our eyes met for the first time. Or at least I didn’t hear anything else. Her voice was almost like honey, soothing and quiet, calming my tired soul like a comfortable blanket. My mind went blank when I looked into her beautiful hazel eyes. There was no hidden agenda in the green and gold specks that broke up a warm brown, just a genuine look of gratitude alongside a certain wariness. Wearing a dark blue pair of jeans and a white button down shirt, she was much more modestly dressed than the blonde I’d sized up of a few moments ago. A sparkly pink scarf decorated her neck hinting that beneath the conservative exterior there was a spark of playfulness. To me, she was much more attractive for leaving something to the imagination, although pressed against me as she was, I didn’t need to imagine the full curves underneath those clothes.

Her eyes darted across my face and she appeared to be appraising me as well. She focused on my eyes as though she could see into me if she looked hard enough. Her look drew me in. I wanted to pull her closer and go ahead and let her see inside, feeling as if she could soothe all the pain and anger I tried to keep locked up. At the same time, I wanted to hold and protect her from whatever caused that look of caution, almost fear, that abounded in her eyes.

What the hell just happened to me? I had never had these thoughts before. She noticed my intense gaze and her cheeks began to turn the cutest shade of pink. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen a woman blush; usually they were so forward I was the one who was embarrassed for them.

“Thank you for catching me,” she said. “That might have ended badly otherwise.”

My mind snapped back to attention when she began to push off of me. I doubt she noticed, but her second hand had settled on my crotch when she landed in my lap, and the gentle pressure she was asserting had it starting to rise and twitch in anticipation of more.

I grabbed her wrist gently. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you not to push too hard there.”

She tilted her head sideways, not immediately understanding my words until I gestured with my eyes at our hands. I knew the instant she figured it out because her pink cheeks turned bright red and she jerked her hand away.

“Oh,” she gasped. “I…I’m so, so sorry!” she said as she carefully crawled off me.

“Trust me, it was my pleasure,” I teased, glancing at my lap.

M.E. Montgomery has been an avid reader her entire life, and her Amazon account will attest to that fact! Recently, several voices began telling their own stories in her head. After being assured she wasn’t crazy and this was the sign of an emerging novel, she decided to put her fingers to work and started typing, and with lots of encouragement, decided to share Alex, Kayla, and Aiden’s dramatic and heartwarming tale.

Her family considers her adept in most subjects, to include science, history, reading, spelling, and all mathematical studies, which loosely means she is the homework queen to her four school aged children. Fortunately, her biology and elementary school teaching background help her to keep up the expert façade, at least for now.

Although born and raised in the Washington DC metro area, she has considered many places to be called home since she left to attend college in North Carolina. She is a proud Navy wife, setting up hearth and home wherever in the world the Navy sends her husband. When she’s not reading or writing, she loves to go camping with her family, drinking wine on the deck, and romantic getaways when her husband’s work permits.

The Buzz About the Book

"The Shadow of the Unicorn provides an innovative and interesting plotline exploring how the fictional unicorns, the extinct dinosaurs, and early humans may have interacted if they co-existed in a post-apocalyptic world. Suzanne de Montigny does an excellent job of exploring the themes of natural disasters and environmental change, human greed, compassion, and courage. At the end of the day, The Shadow of the Unicorn is an entertaining read that I think will be enjoyed by children who love the fantasy genre and are keen on reading about unicorns. Ages 9+" ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews

"Kudos to Ms. de Montigny for writing an original variation on the fantasy epic--unicorns intermingling with dinosaurs! The book's themes include the humane and environmental concerns that Watership Down and the films of Hayao Miyazaki have in common. If you have a middle grader or are just young at heart, pick up The Shadow Of The Unicorn." ~ 5 Star Review, Stuart W., Amazon

"The Shadow of the Unicorn is a must-read for all unicorn lovers, but even more so for the ones, like my self, who hadn't read anything about them yet. It is a thrilling and encouraging story about a young unicorn that has to save his herd after a meteor nearly destroyed their environment and killed the dinosaurs. Suzanne de Montigny created a compelling universe with believable characters and a great adventure story to challenge them with. While the story finishes in this book, I can't wait to read about the new adventures the unicorns will face.." ~ 5 Star Review, Antje H., Amazon

"This story pulled me in with a beautiful portrayal of a time and place where unicorns and dinosaurs live side by side. It moved me forward with unexpected twist and turns (a requirement in any good story). I found it hard to put the book down and was totally engaged in seeing the young characters (unicorns and dinosaurs) survive and grow because of the challenges they faced." ~ 5 Star Review, NW Harris, Amazon

"What a delightfully unique book. Unicorns and dinosaurs facing changing conditions. Darius is a young dinosaur capable of seeing the future. Azaria is a young unicorn who becomes a friend and learns from Darius. Yes, there are humans in this book. They are the villains of the story. Greedy beasts. I think both boys and girls will love this story. Very quick paced and easy to read. A delightful story, and I look forward to more from this author." ~ 5 Star Review, DM Lawrence, Amazon

Review & Giveaway: Found, Near Water by Katherine Hayton

Found, Near Water
by Katherine Hayton

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Rena Sutherland wakes from a coma into a mother’s nightmare. Her daughter’s is missing – lost for four days – but no one has noticed; no one has complained; no one has been searching.
 As the victim support officer assigned to her case, Christine Emmett puts aside her own problems as she tries to guide Rena through the maelstrom of her daughter’s disappearance.
 A task made harder by an ex-husband desperate for control; a paedophile on early-release in the community; and a psychic who knows more than seems possible.
 And intertwined throughout, the stories of six women; six daughters lost.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

On the fifteenth of March 2007 I came home after a short day’s work, and Emma wasn’t there. Jacob was, but he was unconscious on the bed and from the smell of him he hadn’t got to that state accidentally.

There were the police asking endless questions. There was the media attention and my daughter’s photo pasted across the front page of a lot of newspapers. She didn’t look anything like those photos. She was living, breathing, full of motion and life and energy. She would snuggle in next to me on a weekend morning and run a length of my hair through her pudgy wee hands and exclaim in admiration ‘Mummy. You’re so pretty.’

I thought that not knowing was the worst thing I could ever endure. Not knowing if she was in trouble or needing my help or in pain. I worried that she’d been taken by someone that would hurt her, then I worried that she’d been taken by someone who would love her and care for her and in a year or two she’d have forgotten I ever existed. Not knowing was killing me.

But it turned out that knowing was far worse. When I went to the hospital to identify my beautiful girl’s broken body - that was worse than not knowing. When I buried her in the cemetery and compared the size of the gravesite to the other freshly buried bodies - that was worse than not knowing. When I drank myself to sleep on the anniversary of her sixth birthday, and realised that I would likely be doing that until my life ended - that was worse than not knowing.

                                                                   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Review:
It 's a chilling and shocking romance but the author has been very good to involve the reader in the story: once started to read it is impossible to put it down. The main argument of the book are missing children and their parents' suffering: a pain that never ends and should never be tried.
Christine knows that pain but decided to use her suffering to help women like her and created a support group.  She is contacted by Rena, a mother who has awakened from a coma after a bad car accident and has not found her little girl Chloe. A psychic says she could be  near water. As the investigation unfolds, we learn of the sad stories that have lived the other mothers of  support group. In particular Terry, who sees the murderess of her daughter free after only six years
It 's really a good read, engaging, though sad and moving. Must read for those who love true stories and psychological thrillers
 A short interview
1. Any weird things you do when you’re alone?
Why? What do you mean? Who’s looking?
Nothing that seems weird to me. I do talk to myself a lot, usually when I’m typing, but I’m happy to do that in front of people as well so I don’t think that counts. I do throw my controller across the room a lot when the game doesn’t work properly (read: I’m not good at aiming so keep missing things) but I’m sure that’s what they’re designed to do otherwise I would’ve broken one by now.
I laugh out loud a lot at things that are only going on in my head, but surely everyone’s doing that?
2. What is your favorite quote and why?
It’s never too late to be the person you always wanted to be – George Elliot. I think I like it because I’ve started again later in life to try to make something of myself, and this saying reminds me that I can keep doing that until I’m dead.
3. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Cookies ‘n’ cream. I think I eat more cookies in ice cream each year than I do in cookies! I love the slight chewy roughness of the cookie amidst all the smoothness of the cream.
4. Which mythological creature are you most like?
Judging from my hair some mornings I’m tempted to say Medusa, but I think I’m more like Laelaps hunting the Teumessian fox. I’m a dog that always catches its prey hunting a fox that can never be caught. I like paradoxes.
5. What are four things you can’t live without?
Holidays, reading, writing, wifi. Even attempt to take one of those things away from me and I’ll cut your hand off. With a spoon.
Enjoy an excerpt:
“Okay, okay,” I grumble, reaching my arm out, blindly trying to locate my phone, my head still nestled beneath the covers, with no intention of surfacing any time soon.
Whoever is trying to call me better have a damn good reason for doing so. I’m enjoying my sleep in, knowing I don’t have to start work until seven o’clock tonight. The phone ringing is beginning to drive me insane.
‘Ah ha!’ I finally find it hidden amongst last night’s clothes haphazardly thrown on the floor. Pulling my hand back under the covers, I answer the phone. “What?” I grumble.
“Bree, tell me you’re not still in bed?”
“Of course I’m still in bed, it’s still morning,” I snap at Elise. I’m not a morning person, never have been. It takes at least two cups of coffee to get me going and, of all people, Elise should know that. Especially if she wants me to be a little nicer right now.
“No, honey, it’s one o’clock, and would you like me to remind you that it’s Friday?”
“Of course I know it’s Friday, I’m singing at Skyla’s tonight. Now, let me get back to sleep.” She’s still on the other end of the phone, but there’s only silence, and I know she’s waiting for something. But what?
Then it hits me.
Enjoy an excerpt:
“I don’t know what you want me to do,” I said, but my voice was nearly gone, thick with the fear that he was way too close and seemed to think he knew what I wanted. I didn’t want him to know he was right. I don’t know why. My pride was too strong. I’d been this way for so long, I didn’t know how to give in. I didn’t know how to trust.
He opened his mouth, like he wanted to say something else but stopped, and his eyes drifted down to my mouth and held. My breath caught in my throat.
Before I could think to even push him off, his mouth claimed me. He kissed me hard enough that my head pressed back into the wall. His hands slid back to cup around my jaw to keep me from pulling away. His lips pressed down, mouth parted.
I kissed him back. I don’t know what came over me, but I wanted to feel those promises. I wanted to believe, for the moment, that maybe I could just let go, like he said, and trust that I could be accepted for who I was. Was I just like him? Could I be like that? Could I find a place just for me among these guys and waltz in and be with them? I opened my mouth, inviting him in, just a little.
Like opening the gates, his mouth claimed me again. In every possible place I could think to hide, he found me. My mind blanked out. I didn’t have room for anything else other than him and his kiss that told me everything would be all right. His kiss sank into me over and over again. Lips pressed against mine, tugging at my skin, at heart strings, at my core.
When he finally released my mouth so I could breathe, his lips trailed over my face, across my eyes and my brows.
“Why did it have to be you?” He breathed out as he whispered against my face. “I was hunting a thief, and I found a beautiful wreck.”
My review
This story is full of action, plot twists.
Kayli is forced to steal to keep the little brother and prevent him hunt in trouble. However, has its own ethics: steals only to people who can defend themselves and who do not have economic problems.
One day she is caught in fragrant from the guys who threaten her: or joined their Academy or go to prison.
This story is engaging and never boring, the male characters are awesome, and Kayli is a girl determined strong and intelligent.
It 's a pleasant read, fast enough.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPTS:

A Perfect Amish Christmas

“Our grandson Gideon is going to Mexico, and we’ve got to stop him,” Anna Helmuth said as she tied a bright red ribbon around a jar of huckleberry jelly.

Felty, her husband of sixty-three years, shoved a log into the cookstove. “Why would we want to stop him? Mexico sounds mighty nice this time of year.”

“Not as nice as spending Christmas in Bonduel with Dorothy Schrock.”

“She’s a nice girl. As busy as a beaver yet.”

Anna nodded vigorously. “So you see why we must convince Gideon to come to Bonduel instead of Mexico for Christmas.”

“Why do we want to convince our grandson to come to Bonduel?”

Anna smiled as if she was sharing a delightful secret. “He’s got to marry Dottie Schrock, that’s why.”

Felty finished loading his wood and closed the door to the firebox in the cookstove. “Annie-girl, you’re not thinking of making another match, are you?”

Anna pinched the ribbon between the scissors blade and her thumb, sliding the dull blade the length of the ribbon and turning the ribbon into a bouncy curlicue. The jelly jars were to be sold at the Christmas bazaar next week. She held it out for Felty to see. “Isn’t that charming?”

“Anna, you are the charmingest girl I know. But what about Dottie and Gid?”

“Oh, Felty. I’m so pleased that you’re worried about them. What should we do about Dottie and Gid?”

“We don’t have to do anything. Let Gideon go to Mexico in peace,” Felty said.

Anna scolded her husband with her eyes. “We most certainly will not. He and Dottie are perfect for each other.”

“I’m sure Gideon would be glad to know you’re so concerned about his love life.”

“Of course. He’d much rather be falling in love with Dottie than sitting on some muggy Mexico beach wishing for a white Christmas.”

My review

A few years ago I saw a movie on the Amish and  I fell in love on their culture and lifestyle. But this is my first book starring Amish and was not disappointed
There are three short stories set at Christmas time, a sweeter than the other.

The first story is Willow Ridge Christmas Pageant: Maria, a young widow nine months pregnant, is trying to reach her aunt with two children of her deceased husband. But likely to give birth in the middle of the road before reaching the destination. Fortunately warned by the dog that is with them comes to her rescue a carpenter named Seth: take her in his arms to the local clinic, warns her aunt and also assist the girl in childbirth. This story is very sweet and moving, is full of symbolism with a love story difficult but true, is pure Christmas spirit.

The second story is Christmas On Ice Mountain: the protagonists are two men were bitter enemies but once great friends, John Beider and Luke Lapp. Their respective children fall in love and know that their fathers will never give consent. A love story, the Christmas approaching and a sudden snow storm will bring forgiveness in their hearts?
It 's a story really romantic, tender, here is represented true love, pure and innocent

The third story is A Perfect Amish Christmas: Dottie is determined to give her mother the perfect Christmas since the last year could not celebrate. In her frantic race has forgotten the true spirit and meaning of Christmas. A snow storm and Gid help the girl to understand her mistake.
I love the characters in this story, especially the grandparents of Gid.

I adore these three stories: they're  written very well, that warm the heart, are really to be read during the Christmas period.

Charlotte Hubbard

Many moons ago—like, in 1983 while I was still a school librarian—I sold my first story to True Story magazine. This launched me into writing about seventy of those “true confessions” stories over the years, and I’ve been a slave to my overactive imagination ever since. My stories invariably take on a life of their own, different from the way I’ve proposed them: I love it when unforeseen characters and plot twists come along, because they keep me guessing right along with my readers!

I love touring historic homes, trying new recipes, crocheting, and playing with my border collie Ramona—although it’s humbling, having a dog smarter than I am! I’m an ordained Presbyterian deacon, and I devote a lot of time to singing in my church choir and to practicing/performing with our percussion ensemble. I’m celebrating more than thirty-five years with my husband, who—bless him—has never once suggested I get a real job!

I grew up around the Old Order Amish Community of Rote, Pennsylvania, deep in the Allegheny Mountains. I have a great respect for the Amish as a people group and I am proud to represent them in my novels.
