GENRE:  Cozy Mystery

BLURB:

Sydney McCall left behind an ex-fiancé and a New York advertising job to return home to Deer Park, North Carolina and help her sister, Kat, run the local animal shelter, Friendly Paws. Determined to save the shelter from financial trouble, Sydney and Kat organize a cat café fundraising event at a local coffee shop. Things are looking up until their landlord, Trowbridge Littleton, threatens to shut down the event. When Sydney drops by his art gallery to make peace, she finds Kat--along with Littleton's dead body.

Local homicide detective Will Worthington--who just happens to be Sydney's old high school crush--is highly suspicious of the sisters' involvement. Desperate to clear their names from the suspect list, Sydney pounces on the investigation. With the help of one of the shelter cats, a savvy orange tabby named Toby, Sydney begins poking her nose into other local businesses whose owners may have benefited from Littleton's death--until the killer notices she's pawing a little too closely at the truth.

My Review:

This book has all the things I love most in a cozy mystery: a small cozy town, an inexperienced detective, an animal with detective skills, an old love between the heroine and the man who manages the investigation.
Sydney and Kat are two sisters who love animals very much. Sydney has recently returned to Deer Park after losing her boyfriend and her job in New York and helps her sister in fundraising for her shelter. She has a very original idea to help the shelter and its guests: organize a special event in collaboration with one of their friend who owns a cafe where customers can have coffee with cats of the shelter that are available for adoption. But the owner of their shelter, Mr Littleton, a very stingy man and doesn't like animals, doesn't approve. When he is found dead Kat is the main suspect. Sydney with the help of her new cat Toby will have to investigate to save her sister.
I loved Toby, I too would like a cat like him, thanks to him the story was even more pleasant and enjoyable.
It was an easy and well written read, the plot is very intriguing and well-woven, there are many twists and it is difficult to find the culprit until the end.
Great debut for this new series, I look forward to the new episodes.
I recommend it to those who love cozy mystery and cats.

EXCERPT:

We were in the doorway now.  A large desk was at the far end of what appeared to be an office.  The light was coming from a small lamp perched on the edge of the desk, and as we crossed the threshold, it flickered and then went out.  Kat shone the pencil thin beam of the flashlight around the room, letting out a sharp cry as it hit the wall nearest us.  “Lightswitch,” she squealed, and a minute later the room was filled with a harsh fluorescent light.

I glanced around.  Yes, this was definitely an office, and not a very tidy one at that.  There were several file cabinets pushed up against the far wall, and two of the drawers in the one on the left were half open. Papers were strewn across the desk, and some file folders had dropped onto the floor and were scattered across the Oriental rug.

“Good Lord,” my sister exclaimed.  “For someone always so fastidious about his appearance, he certainly likes to work in a mess.”

I frowned.  “It looks more to me like it’s been ransacked. Someone was searching for something. What do you think, Kat? Kat?”

My sister had moved over to the far corner of the room and was standing before a large wardrobe.  “Wow, this is beautiful,” she said, lifting a hand to run it over the smooth exterior. She balled her hand into a fist and rapped it against the wood. “Solid oak.  I saw a picture of one like this in a catalog.  French, dates back to the late 1800’s.  I wonder what it’s doing in his office?”

“Who knows? Maybe he keeps his suit jackets in it,” I said.  “Why do you care, anyway?”

“It’s such a beautiful piece,” my sister murmured. “Too good for that rotter. It seems out of place in this office.”

“Maybe it just came in and he’s got it here for pricing,” I ventured.

“Maybe.  I wouldn’t mind having something like this,” Kat said, running her hand once again across the smooth wood.  “It looks deep enough – I wonder if the doors swing out all the way? It would be great to put a TV in.”

I eyed the piece. “That thing looks hand-carved. He probably wants an arm and a leg for it.”

“Probably.” She gave the handle a tug. “Hm.  The doors seem to be stuck.”

I waved  my hand impatiently.  “Oh for goodness sakes, leave it alone. Must you examine it now?”

Her lower lip thrust forward. “Yes.  Who knows, I might not get another chance.”

I shot her a sharp look.  “You’re not thinking of buying this, are you?”

She sighed deeply. “I suppose not.  Littleton will probably want some astronomical figure for it.  But I might never get another opportunity to see such a finely made one up close.” She shot me an appealing look.  “Give me a hand, won’t you? You’re strong. Maybe if we both pull on the handle at the same time it’ll open.”

I knew my sister. Once Kat made up her mind about something she was like a pitbull with a bone. I knew when it was futile to argue with her. “Okay, fine. But if we get this open, one quick look and then we’re out of here.”

She nodded and I placed my hand on top of hers. “On the count of three, give it all you’ve got. One, two—three.”

We both tugged at the same time and suddenly the door flew open.  We went staggering backwards at the same time the body of Trowbridge Littleton, his eyes bulging almost out of their sockets, tongue lolling to the side, hit the floor at our feet.

Review & Giveaway: It Started With a Kiss by Ella Quinn

It Started With a Kiss
by Ella Quinn

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

What is a young Worthington woman to do when the man of her dreams is not who she thinks he is?

This season, all eyes are on the Earl of Worthington’s spirited, beautiful sister, Lady Louisa Vivers. Many gentlemen are vying for her attention in and around the ton. Yet, Louisa longs for someone who can take her beyond the ballroom—a man who is worldly, adventurous, and passionate. She won’t settle for just any suitor. She wants her true soul mate—and she’ll know him when she sees him.

Is Gideon, the Duke of Rothwell, him? The moment he and Louisa meet, they share a powerful attraction. Rides at sunrise and waltzes at dusk follow. Finally, Gideon can no longer resist the urge to embrace her, and Louisa is sure he will ask for her hand. But Gideon believes he is in no position to marry. The Rothwell estate has gone bankrupt, a scandal simmers in its wake, and he has nothing left to offer. Now, he must decide if he will let pride stand in the way of true love—or if he will risk everything, and let the lady decide for herself…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Review:
Each book of this series was great, romantic stories with a lot of lovable characters, a bit of suspense and the right dose of humor.
Lady Louisa understand at first glance that Gideon is the man who wants to marry. He is very attracted to her but has many problems to solve and no money to assure her a decent future. In addition Gideon's cousin wants to marry Louisa and asks for his help but he can not give up so easily to her. Will he solve his debts or must give up forever to her?
Adorable and well done descriptions of places, clothing and characters, it was a pleasant immersion in London of 1815. The characters were delightful and interesting: Louisa was a strong woman, determined, a great fighter who never gives up. Gideon was a man of honor, generous but very stubborn and proud.
The story is well written and engaging, is hard to put it down, Ella Quinn never disappoints.
If you love historical romances this  Regency is a must read.
EXCERPT:
Stanwood House, Mayfair
“Measles?” Lady Louisa Vivers exclaimed. “All three of them?”
Excited to tell someone about the gentleman she’d seen in the Park, she had gone directly to the parlor she shared with her friend and new sister, Lady Charlotte Carpenter.
Just before the Season began in earnest, Matt Worthington, Louisa’s brother, had married Lady Grace Carpenter. Grace had guardianship of her seven brothers and sisters. The marriage had given Louisa a total of ten brothers and sisters, including her own three sisters, not including Grace. Sometime this coming winter, the number of children would increase to twelve with the arrival of Matt and Grace’s first child. The girls were ecstatic to be aunts. Even the boys were excited.
However, as Louisa opened her mouth to speak, Charlotte told her of the doctor’s diagnosis. Obviously, that news took precedence over Louisa’s.
“Yes,” Charlotte replied. “Theo, Mary, and Philip. According to Cousin Jane and the information your mama left for Grace, the others, including Grace and Matt, have already had them.”
“Will that put off Grace and Matt’s trip to Worthington?” The addition of so many family members meant that not only Worthington House but the Worthington main estate as well must undergo extensive renovations in order to accommodate everyone. In fact, the only one of her brothers and sisters not residing at present in the Carpenter town home, Stanwood House, was Charlie, Earl of Stanwood, who was at Eton. Even Louisa’s mother and her new husband, Richard, Viscount Wolverton, would stay at Stanwood House for the rest of the Season while Worthington House was being renovated. Well, after they returned from their wedding trip to Richard’s estate in Kent, of course. Fortunately, the two houses were directly across Berkeley Square from each other.
“I think they must go,” Charlotte said. Sitting at the desk, she tapped the feather end of the quill against her cheek. “Renovations must be started in the schoolroom there if we are all going to reside at your family’s estate after the Season.”
Louisa and her sister were almost halfway through their first Season. This new development certainly complicated things.
Chewing her bottom lip, she began to mentally adjust her plans to account for the new development. “Hmm, I suppose we should write notes excusing ourselves from the entertainments we had planned to attend.” She glanced at the writing table. “What a bother. Why did the children have to choose now to fall ill?”
Charlotte let out a peal of laughter, lightening the mood. “That is almost exactly what Matt said.”
Review & Giveaway:Marie Antoinette’s Darkest Days by Will Bashor
Will Bashor
on Tour March 13-24 with
MARIE ANTOINETTE’S DARKEST DAYS
Marie Antoinette’s Darkest Days: Prisoner No. 280 in the Conciergerie
(history – nonfiction) Release date: December 1, 2016 at Rowman & Littlefield 392 pages ISBN: 978-1442254992 Website | Goodreads
SYNOPSIS
This compelling book begins on the 2nd of August 1793, the day Marie Antoinette was torn from her family’s arms and escorted from the Temple to the Conciergerie, a thick-walled fortress turned prison. It was also known as the waiting room for the guillotine because prisoners only spent a day or two here before their conviction and subsequent execution. The ex-queen surely knew her days were numbered, but she could never have known that two and a half months would pass before she would finally stand trial and be convicted of the most ungodly charges. Will Bashor traces the final days of the prisoner registered only as Widow Capet, No. 280, a time that was a cruel mixture of grandeur, humiliation, and terror. Marie Antoinette’s reign amidst the splendors of the court of Versailles is a familiar story, but her final imprisonment in a fetid, dank dungeon is a little-known coda to a once-charmed life. Her seventy-six days in this terrifying prison can only be described as the darkest and most horrific of the fallen queen’s life, vividly recaptured in this richly researched history.
My Review
It's really well written and very accurate, the author has done a perfect job search. I knew only superficially the story of the death sentence of Marie Antoinette, thanks to this reading I have been able to deepen her last days and learn more about this ambiguous historical figure.
The author has made a great job at providing a detailed but impartial description of the last days of Marie Antoinette. She was imprisoned with her children, then she also was separated from them and taken to solitary confinement in a damp prison, below the level of the Seine. Despite the death sentence, many people have continued to love her and have organized several attempts to save her. I really loved her dignity that she had never lost despite the physical and mental suffering and the degradation in which she is forced to live, she had always lived in prosperity.
It was a very interesting and fascinating reading, never boring, even if it is a non-fiction can be read as a romance. The descriptions are very detailed and thorough that truly seemed to be there locked up with the queen. Very useful even the pictures and maps provided.
This book is perfect for those who love history and  French history in particular.
“I’m puzzled.  Why did they send the video to me?” Kate murmured.  “How did they know about me?”
“They’ve got some sort of inside information.  Or maybe they contacted the others when they saw you at the airport.”
“How did they find out my name?”
“I don’t know,” he said looking at her in a way that had nothing to do with what she was saying.
She was unprepared when he bent and kissed her and even more so for her own reaction, for the need and want that made her put her arms around his neck and, for a few seconds, to allow herself to sink into that kiss.
It was instinctive and so very wrong.  She pushed him back, her hands on his shoulders, creating a distance between them.  They were trapped in an emotional situation and it was a natural human reaction to turn from trauma to passion.
He stood there for a moment then his eyes met hers and a truth seemed to pass between them.  That what happened was real, as real as the tragedy unfolding around them.  But now it was Tara who eclipsed all and they both knew it.
“She’ll die if we don’t get her out of there soon,” he said.  “Let’s move.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
The Canadian prairies are my home and while the prairie landscape is blessed with beautiful blue skies, it also has four seasons that come on full throttle – especially winter and because of that I like to travel.  Often on those trips, stories are born.
In 2011 I won my city's writing award, and was the first romance writer to do so since its inception.  In 2013 my romantic suspense was a semi-finalist in the Kindle Book Awards.  Published in historic romance and paranormal romance as well as romantic suspense, in February 2016, my first novel was published by Harlequin Intrigue.
There’s no lack of places to set a story as my imagination and the too long prairie winters may find me seeking adventure.  The memories of those worlds both near and far, the words of a stranger, the furtive look one man gives another, often become the catalyst for a suspenseful story with a deadly villain and an intrepid hero and heroine who must battle for their right to love or even their right to live.
When not dreaming of other stories, I can be found scouting out a garage sale or two, dusting off my roller blades or just thinking about the next adventure that may be miles away or in my own backyard.
What do ice cream and Sadie Montgomery have in common? They're both ice cold, but one taste is never enough.
I wanted to be friends — I would have even settled for her seeing me as anything but a nerd — but there was no getting through. So just like any hard-headed, red-blooded man out there, I made up my mind.
I’d make my coworker fall for me.
I’d like to say it was simple, but like every other epic love story, all it took was one drunken night and a lot of naked courage to get the girl. For a moment, at least.
Love with a coworker is never simple, especially since Sadie’s trying to keep us on the low. Not to mention her persistent ex-boyfriend who won’t leave her alone. But I’ve never been good at giving up, and I don’t plan to start now.
The whole thing is a recipe for a rocky road, but I plan to eat the whole gallon, no matter how bad the brain freeze.
About the Author:
Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if "It's Raining Men" starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.
Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing... enter her first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!
Felix ran from the cabin toward the trail down. "Come on!"
Ben followed close behind, panic hitting him. Why did Laura leave? They were here to help defend her. Damn her! He never should have left her alone.
"Felix, why didn't you see this happening?"
"I did."
Ben grabbed the back of Felix's coat and lunged at him. Felix turned on one heel and swung his arm out, holding Ben off like a child.
Ben struggled to break free. "What the hell is wrong with you? Why didn't you stop her? She's gonna die. I need to protect her."
"This is the only way, Ben. Trust me."
"She's the one person I've cared about in a long, long time. Please, don't let her die."
Felix released him. "I don't intend to. Now come on."
Felix turned away and ran fast down the trail. His massive body moved nimble over the rugged ground. He looked like a giant, dark beast lunging toward its prey. Ben could only run after him. There was nothing else he could do.
They hadn't run far when a deafening blast pushed them to the ground. The cabin exploded behind them in flames. Fire devoured old wood and metal, dancing upward toward the sky. The heat grabbed at them with fiery intensity. Ben could feel it burning his face and hands.
"Laura," he whispered, stunned by the violence aimed at them. Their enemy was real. And he was here. Felix and Ben turned and both ran faster down the mountain, lunging down the trail, grabbing branches to push themselves along.
Felix had to be right. Please, let Felix be right.
