Synopsis

They call it “the Brewmaster’s Widow”; the abandoned brewery where Death Bogart’s brother died in an arson fire.
With his girlfriend, Wren Morgan, Death goes home to St. Louis to take on a deeply personal mystery. When Randy Bogart went into the Einstadt Brewery, he left his broken badge behind at the firehouse. So why did the coroner find one on his body? Every answer leads to more questions. Why did the phony badge have the wrong number? Who set the brewery fire? What is the connection between Randy’s death and the mysterious Cherokee Caves, where the opulent playground of 19th century beer barons falls into slow decay?
Not understanding how and why he lost his brother is breaking the ex-Marine’s heart. But the Brewmaster’s Widow is jealous of her secrets. Prying them loose could cost Death and Wren both their lives.

My Review

This cozy mystery is really engaging and funny, full of suspense, twists, humor and even romanticism.
Death has lost his brother in a terrible fire. He comes back to St. Louis with his girlfriend Wren to solve some problems related to inheritance. But soon he discovers that there are strange inconsistencies about his brother's death and, together with Wren, begins to investigate.
I love everything about this story but the main characters in a particular way. Wren and Death are really great together. She is an assistant auctioneer with a keen intuition to solve mysteries. He is a private detective and a former veteran who was severely injured in Afghanistan. Another very interesting aspect of Loretta Ross books are the setting. In this story we know the history of the old brewery, a truly fascinating place.
The style of this author is truly captivating and engaging, from the first words captures your attention and leaves you glued to the pages until the end.
This is the second in the series but I do not believe it is essential to have read the first to enjoy this one but I recommend you to read it, it's really exciting as this one.
If you love the cozy mystery and the fire department is a book not to be missed.
