Genre- YA/ Fairy Tale/ Fantasy

Beautiful, selfish and spoiled are the three words most commonly used to describe Princess Eliza. Common people are expendable in her world, there only to serve her needs. Betrothed to the most handsome prince in her land and adored by her father, Eliza had little thought for others or their feelings. An unkind word directed at the wrong person brings down a curse on Eliza, marring the perfection of her physical beauty making it so her outside now reflects what is within her. Horrified by her own reflection and tired of the whispers of everyone around her, Eliza flees the safety of her father’s castle, seeking out the solitude of the outlying forests.

Greysen James spends his days hunting and gathering in the forests that fall between the kingdoms. In his small no-man’s land, he owes no one fealty and he likes it that way. His life is all about keeping himself and his younger sister, Cornelia alive and fed. When Eliza comes stumbling into his path, he has two choices: let her flounder on and drag every royal guard searching for her through his forest or take her in and teach her to survive on her own. Neither option is appealing to him but once his sister meets the prickly princess, Cornelia won’t let him leave Eliza out in the cold.

Greysen finds himself at odds with the princess almost immediately; he can’t stomach her entitled attitude. As far as he can tell, Eliza has no grasp on the true realities of life outside the castle and she isn’t overly fond of Greyson’s seeming indifference to her. With Cornelia urging them to coexist they’re finally forced into a grudging respect for one another.

Can Greysen help Eliza change her ways before it’s too late? Or will she learn that her beauty really was always just skin deep?

Book Blas & Giveawayt: The Soul Retrieval by Ann. W. Jarvie

THE SOUL RETRIEVAL
by Ann W. Jarvie

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Inspired by a true story, The Soul Retrieval is a suspenseful tale of love, loss and healing which follows traumatized southern beauty Henrietta Clayborn as she moves between her home in a small South Carolina town and the New Mexico Native American reservation whose spontaneous healings keep drawing her physician husband back. Tortured by her awful secrets, Henrietta struggles to thrive in either locale, but it is her unlikely friendship with Joe Loco––an eccentric Native American mystic with an Elvis fetish and a gift for healing––that shows her the way to be whole again.
Set in the late 1950s, The Soul Retrieval is richly woven with spiritual insights but also deadly secrets, forbidden healings, a murder mystery, stunning scenery and an unforgettable cast of characters.
A story of transcendent and inspiring power that is both entertaining and enlightening, readers will be cheering for the uptight woman from South Carolina to push through her fears of the forbidden as she searches for truth and healing, faces great obstacles on the frontier of self and ultimately becomes more than she ever thought possible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

After finishing the second nocturne, he looked up at her. “You know that I’ve been researching the high incidence of spontaneous healings here, right?” Jeff was both a lead physician and medical researcher at the Medichero Indian Hospital. He reached for a pack of cigarettes from the pocket of his short-sleeved white shirt.

“Uh-huh,” Henrietta said. She barely heard what he said. How am I going to get into it? How am I going to tell him? She had asked herself these questions at least a million times. She picked up a pen and notebook from the coffee table, trying to keep her hands busy.

Jeff smoked in silence a moment before continuing. “There’s more to it than even I imagined.”

“More to what?” she asked. She absently doodled on the page without looking up. How am I going to tell him?

Jeff blew smoke. “The spontaneous healings that I’m so interested in ... the medicine men here seem to be doing something real to affect the recoveries.”

Now he had her attention. “They are?” She looked at him. “Like what?”

Instead of answering, Jeff got up and turned toward the bay windows that cradled the piano in a small alcove off the living room of the doctor’s cottage. His silhouette against the bright morning light was a man-shaped eclipse, his muscled edges luminous and blurred by the smoldering tobacco. It gave him an unworldly appearance, and Henrietta was reminded about how often she felt like an outsider here, and even back home.

SYNOPSIS

Possession. Power. Passion. New York Times bestselling novelist M. J. Rose creates her most provocative and magical spellbinder yet in this gothic novel set against the lavish spectacle of 1890s Belle Époque Paris. Sandrine Salome flees New York for her grandmother’s Paris mansion to escape her dangerous husband, but what she finds there is even more menacing. The house, famous for its lavish art collection and elegant salons, is mysteriously closed up. Although her grandmother insists it’s dangerous for Sandrine to visit, she defies her and meets Julien Duplessi, a mesmerizing young architect. Together they explore the hidden night world of Paris, the forbidden occult underground and Sandrine’s deepest desires. Among the bohemians and the demi-monde, Sandrine discovers her erotic nature as a lover and painter. Then darker influences threaten—her cold and cruel husband is tracking her down and something sinister is taking hold, changing Sandrine, altering her. She’s become possessed by La Lune: A witch, a legend, and a sixteenth-century courtesan, who opens up her life to a darkness that may become a gift or a curse. This is Sandrine’s “wild night of the soul,” her odyssey in the magnificent city of Paris, of art, love, and witchery.

My Review

MJ Rose has a style really engaging and captivating: it really seems to be with Sandrine and explore the Paris of the Belle Epoche. She has been able to mix in an excellent way  mystery with passion, historical elements with paranormal. I was completely glued to the pages.
Sandrine is alone and desperate in New York: has just lost the man she loved most in the world, her father, and found out that her husband is dangerous, greedy and cruel. The only way out of she sees requires much courage: to reach her grandmother in Paris, she had been there only once, ten years ago. You venture alone in a very long journey and arrived at grandma's house makes a bitter discovery: the house is empty. What to do? Where to go? She's a girl of 24 years, on the run from her husband and the only person who knows in the whole city is not found. It rains and is attacked by a robber who attempts to steal her luggage. Fortunately intervenes grandmother's neighbor and brings her to Grandma. She is living in a hotel because she's restoring her house but doesn't mention it willingly and doesn't want Sandrine visit it. The curiosity of Sandrine however, is too strong and visit the house alone. She meets Julien, an architect who is cataloging the objects of her grandmother to turn the house into a museum. Julien brings Sandrine to discover a different Paris, made up of mysteries, treasures but also magic, witchcraft and so much passion. It seems that house is haunted by a witch who wants to own Sandrine .... Will grandmother protect her?
The characters are very strong. Grandma is a very famous courtesan and a person very considerable in the social life of Paris. She had an illegitimate child who always wanted to hide his origins. The son, Sandrine's father, tried to make a new life in America becoming a banker very important and building a bright future for his daughter. Until in their lives came Benjamin and ruined everything. The relationship between Sandrina and her father is very strong: he sent to his daughter the passion for art and museums. It's this passion that drives Sandrina doesn't listen to her grandmother and to visit the house and its treasures. Sandrine is a very strong woman, determined and courageous, is a woman who wants to know and learn and love so much art and historical pieces. Living in Paris also brings out her passionate side.
It's a must-read for anyone who loves Paris, romantic suspense and historical novels.

EXCERPT:

Chapter 13: Preparation for the first mission

“Are you excited about our first mission?” asked Turin.

“Yes and no.” stated Avery. “I'm not sure that I want to come face to face with Locien, the Snake Dragon. I've heard stories about this creature destroying complete armies.”

“Let's hope Erynel's plan works and we can just go collect the scales while Locien is away so we don't have to face her,” said Kaylen.

“Erynel… why does she hate you so much, Kaylen?” asked Turin looking his friend in the eyes.

“I don't know—I seem to have that effect on people,” replied Kaylen, looking at Avery and smiling.

Avery looked down, embarrassed.

Alysse sat there quietly, trying to take in as much as she could.

Everyone stopped talking when Erynel walked into the room. Kaylen was impressed as to how someone so young could command such a presence.

“Today, you all leave on your first major mission. Do not think of this as a social event or an adventure. We have a specific task, and if you wish to be admitted to the League of the Shadows, you will obey my commands at all times. This mission is a dangerous one. Chances are that not all of you will make it back alive. One single mistake can cost us dearly. Stay close to the group, and don't do anything unless I tell you to.”

Review: Granny Snows A Sneak by Julie Seedorf

Synopsis:
Granny may be retired as Fuchsia, Minnesota’s one-woman undercover sleuth for the Fuchsia Police Department, but that doesn’t mean she still doesn’t need a trusty weapon. Her weapon of choice? A pink snow shovel. When Granny runs over a dead body with her snowmobile, she unwittingly sets off a chain of events that involves mislabeled corpses, empty graves, and stolen money––lots of it! Who’s at the bottom of this years old crime? Granny has an idea, but she has little time to investigate, when in just days she’s scheduled to marry the love of her life, Franklin Gatsby, in a post-Christmas ceremony. So, Granny decides to enlist the help of her friends and neighbors. Add in Christmas holiday excitement and the arrival of Granny’s family, who are all there for her wedding, and mayhem ensues. Of course, Granny can always count on her many furry friends to provide her with moral support, but it’s quite possible that Granny––that is, Hermiony Vidalia Criony Fiddlestadt––has a secret or two of her own, which may very well be revealed as GRANNY SNOWS A SNEAK.
My Review:
The hilarious Granny and her strange and eccentric friends, some humans other animals, are back: I could not wait. Now Julie Seedorf has become a guarantee of laughter and fun: the plot is intriguing and original, the characters are  hilarious and Granny can not stay away from trouble and comic and embarrassing situations.
In this book Granny meets many adversities: snow, a new neighbor, two marriages and a strange movements of corpses.
Thor, her son, moves to Fuchsia, near her home and becomes the head of the local police. He prohibits Granny to continue working undercover for the town's merchants. Also because her latest survey has made her very popular, it would be difficult to investigate secretly. Plus her fake relationship with Franklin has become real and serious and  they'll get married in a few weeks, the day after Christmas. It will be a double wedding because with them will marry Thor with Heather, the daughter of Franklin.
After a snowfall that could block her at home, she decides to buy a snowmobile and in her first trip  the new neighbor accompanies her (even if he had not been offered a ride). When they land ruinously in front of her house , she realizes that have invested a man but luckily he was already dead. It 's a corpse from the cemetery that is moved in front of her house. The corpse seems to be the father of her children. Those who have will put? And for what reason? Granny obviously can not  let that only her son and Franklin investigate, can not stand doing nothing ......
This town in Minnesota is enriched ever more bizarre and exhilarathing characters as Silas, Granny's new neighbor: according to Granny he is disreputable, crotchety, disagreeable skunk. Adorable is Angel, Heather's daughter  and future Granny's grandson: she is the only one capable of making the old lady tender and sweet. Granny is always more fun, shrewish but maybe in love.
It's the third book in the series "Fuchsia Minnesota Series", but can be read very well without the first two books: the author is very good at providing the essential elements for understanding the relationships between the characters and events that occurred in previous episodes without boring those who already know them.
I hope to return soon to Fuchsia in Minnesota.

My Review

This thriller engages you from the first page, it's really hard to put it down: it's full of action, twists and unsolved mysteries, three spectacular places such as Rome, Jerusalem and Berlin where everything takes place, and let's not forget the main characters, a French detective really good and a brave girl. It 's a really intriguing mystery to solve: two murders, a Masonic sect and a secret society who seek to dominate the world.
The secret society Thule had tried to dominate the world with Hitler. When Germany was about to be finally defeated they tried to save the sect putting some members to safety and making them guard the precious documents of their society. But one of them is killed and documents end up in Russian hands. After sixty years, everything seems to resurface because of two murders so far apart from each other geographically but very close: one in Rome and one in Jerusalem. The way to hit is  the same: three shots at the same points, shoulder, neck and head. The inspector Marcas is an expert in this type of murder, is investigating the Freemasons for years and tries to solve the case with the help of Jade Zewenski, the head of security at the Embassy in Rome. Initially the relations between the two are not great, Jade does not trust the ability of Marcas but must learn to work together and trust each other because the Masons are acting very quickly and need to be faster than them for not to be defeated.
This is the first of a new series on the Detective Marcas, should be nine in all. This book has also  an Italian edition, the title is "Il rituale dell'ombra".
It's must-read for those who love thrillers

Blog Tour: The Only Exception by A. L. Davis

Title: The Only Exception: Broken
Author: A.L. Davis
Genre: Romance
Release Date: Dec 13, 2014

 “Everyone I’ve ever loved has been taken from me and I can’t take the heartache anymore. It’s time to build that wall around my heart and let no one in, no exceptions.”

Ellie never did know her mother; before she turned twenty she lost her father in the line of duty; a freak accident stole her fiancé from her before they had a chance to start their life together. She wants answers, but now that she’s living in a new town and trying to start over, she’s finding that it’s not that easy. Maybe new surroundings are what she needs to make it easier to move on and forget all about her old life. It could have been…until he showed up.

“Having the sort of job that is as dangerous as what I do doesn’t allow for a personal life, no exceptions.”

Jack and his team of military misfits have seen their fair share of war zones and violent criminals. Skilled in precision rescue operations, they’ve traveled into some of the most terrifying countries and stood up to intimidating adversaries, but when a mentor of Jack’s calls them in for a favor that he is unable to turn down, he finds himself up against his most challenging fear of all…his heart. There is a fine line between getting close enough to do your job and getting so close that you get attached. That line used to be obvious, but now that he’s met her, things have blurred and priorities have shifted. Can he keep his feelings in check and still protect Ellie from an adversary more dangerous and twisted than she could ever imagine?

“And this…” I tossed the manila envelope back to the desk, “…is not a job. It’s a death sentence. My death sentence. I’m walking in blind. I mean, how do I know she’s not running from the law?”

Lou shook his head, his mouth contorting into a tight frown, and answered matter-of-factly, “She’s not. And why would that stop you?”

“How do I know for sure? How do you know for sure?” I challenged, making him smile.

Somehow, that irritated me even more. He was hiding something.

“Because I know,” he answered, lips pursed, eyes narrowing at me. He didn’t look away and neither did I. I wanted to know what he was thinking. What was he hiding? Unfortunately, he was going to make it difficult to find out.

I sighed, knowing that was the only answer I was going to get. “Is she hiding from her husband or boyfriend or something?”

“Most definitely not,” he answered with a heavy sigh, sadness flicking across his face.

This piqued my interest. And why was a small part of me so damn happy with that answer?

“Did she kill someone?” I figured I already knew the answer to this one, but I had to ask.

He chuckled. “Absolutely not.”

“What if she’s got the mob after her? Did she piss off a terrorist group?”

“So what if they are? So what if she did? You’ve been wrapped up in worse and handled it,” he answered quickly. “Stop with the stalling already, Jack. I need to know. Are. You. In.”

“Lou, I don’t help people against their will because if they won’t listen and do what I tell them to do, bad things happen. She doesn’t want me anywhere near her. She won’t even look at me, let alone talk to me. Ellie dodges me all day long. I tried to just talk to her like you asked me, but she avoids me like the plague and scurries off in the other direction. She looks at me like…like…”

“Like the frightened child she is,” Lou interrupted sighing.

A LITTLE INTERVIEW

Where do you write from?
When I started, I wrote on a desktop we have, but that was hard because then I was separated from the family. I tried on my phone, got a Bluetooth keyboard which made it was portable. I could write on the couch, or outside, or take it camping, but it was frustrating as the apps I found to write with changed my formatting and fonts. I now have a laptop so I keep it handy and write where ever I want!
How long have you been writing and when did you start?
 I started writing in high school. A friend of mine and I would come up with plotlines and pass it back and forth.
Do you have any special routine you follow when you write?
Only that I must have a snack, a drink (first I go for water, but when I get stuck out comes the wine), and sometimes music.
What was your favourite book when you were  a teen?
This is totally out of the genre of what I write now, but I loved Watchers by Dean Koontz.
Who are your favorite authors?
Hard to pick. There are so many. Dean Koontz. JM Darhower. TM Franklin. SL Scott. There are authors out there I have yet to read but are on my radar like Skye Turner, T.K. Leigh, Author M. Robinson…I know I’m missing some, but those are the ones that come to mind.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I like to spend time with my boys. We go camping in the winter out to the desert. I read when I can.
What are you working on now?
Working on book 2 of my series.
