Synopsis
From USA Today bestselling author Gigi Pandian comes a modern tale of ancient intrigue.
Unpacking her belongings in her new hometown of Portland, Oregon, herbalist and reformed alchemist Zoe Faust can’t help but notice she’s picked up a stowaway. Dorian Robert-Houdin is a living, breathing three-and-a-half-foot gargoyle—not to mention a master of French cuisine—and he needs Zoe’s expertise to decipher a centuries-old text. Zoe, who’s trying to put her old life behind her, isn’t so sure she wants to reopen her alchemical past… until the dead man on her porch leaves her no choice.
Includes recipes!

My review:
It 's a fun and compelling story, a mystery with a little of fantasy, alchemy and humor.
Zoe Faust is an alchemist who has about 400 years. She spent the last years of her life traveling from place to place but now has decided to settle in Portland. To go unnoticed decides to buy a crumbling house. While undoes her boxes located a nice gargoyle speaker. He is called Dorian, comes from the store that had Zoe in France. Knows her true identity and he needs her help to find out the mystery linked to his birth. In a book of alchemy is hidden the secret formula that has given life to Dorian and Zoe must find otherwise the gargoyle returns  stone. The next morning Dorian has disappeared along with his book and Zoe find on the front door dead the man who was to do the renovation of her house. She believes that he was poisoned but the police say was stabbed.
In this novel there are then two mysteries to solve: who and why killed the manufacturer and who stole the precious and mysterious book of Dorian. Very interesting also the various notions of herbs and vegan cuisine and the various elements of alchemy. But the strong point of the novel for me is Dorian. He's adorable, too cute and funny: a gargoyle who speaks with a strong French accent, very hungry and who can cook very well ...... Even Zoe is a well-built character: intelligent, courageous but sometimes  is a bit heavy, always repeats that she is vegan, which is not an alchemist .....
Very nice idea to add at the end of vegan recipes: is a must try ......
I can not wait to read the other books in the series: sometimes it was a bit slow pace, too many descriptions, but it was still a compelling and enjoyable read, quite original.
I received an EARC from net galley and the publisher for review.
