Vintage Mystery BINGO 2014: Silver & Gold Edition

Here are the rules:
All books must be from the mystery category (crime fiction, detective fiction, espionage, etc.).  The mystery/crime must be the primary feature of the book--ghost stories, paranormal, romance, humor, etc are all welcome as ingredients, but must not be the primary category under which these books would be labeled at the library or bookstore.

Golden qualifiers will be books originally published pre-1960 and silver qualifiers will come from the period 1960 to 1989.

The same book can't be used twice to fill two squares.

The challenge is running from January 1st through to December 31st, 2014.

*BINGOS may be claimed by completing all spaces in a row--horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.  You may also claim a “Four Corner” BINGO by reading a book for each of the four corners plus two more spaces—any two.  A valid BINGO must have six complete spaces.

*Any challenger who completes one BINGO will be entered in a drawing at the end of the year.  Any challenger who completes two or more BINGOs (either from the same card or BINGOs from each card) will automatically be offered a prize from the prize list.  Any challenger who covers a card by completing all categories will automatically be offered a prize from the prize list (as referred to in the "two or more BINGOs" section) PLUS a special surprise bonus.

Check them out and sign up HERE.

The cards for Gold and Silver have the same categories.

I might try for both of them

Recensione: Life of Pi by Yann Martel (Vita di Pi)

Titolo Vita di Pi
Autore Yann Martel
Editore Piemme
Collana Bestseller
Pagine  334
Pubblicato  11/09/2001
Titolo Originale Life of Pi
Luoghi  Pondicherry (India)
             Oceano Pacifico
Periodo  1977-78

E' difficile credere all'amore, chiedetelo a qualsiasi innamorato. E' difficile credere alla vita, chiedetelo a qualsiasi scienziato. E' difficile credere in Dio, chiedetelo a qualsiasi fedele.
Review
Pi Patel is a very special little boy who lives in Pondicherry, India, together with his brother and parents who have a zoo. He is a vegetarian and is very attracted by religions to the point of getting to profess three simultaneously. One day his family, for economic reasons, decided to emigrate to Canada. They close the zoo and many of the animals they owned start with them on a Japanese merchant ship. During the trip there is a shipwreck and Pi manages to escape on a lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and Richard Parker, a Bengal tiger. The zebra and the orangutan are immediately killed by the hyena, which in turn will be murdered by the tiger. The child will roam the Pacific Ocean from just fighting hunger, thirst, heat of the day and the cold of the night and against the fury of Richard Parker.Although there are some nonsense, as the encounter with the blind man on another boat or the island in the middle of the sea, the story is very realistic. The finish is very particular......
I really liked the style of Martel with very short sentences the story is really smooth, engaging, to be read all in one go.
In conclusion, the novel is intense, compelling, sometimes funny, unique because it contains both elements of zoology and ethology, both in philosophy and religion. It 's a book about the search for the meaning of life and the struggle for survival. Really recommend it to all

Recensione: The Whole Package by Cynthia Ellingsen (Amori impossibili e fragole con panna)

Titolo Amori impossibili e fragole con panna
Autore Cynthia Ellingsen
Editore Newton Compton
Collana Gli insuperabili
Pagine  432
Pubblicato  28/3/13
Titolo Originale The Whole Package
Luoghi  Schaumburg, Illinois
Personaggi
Jackie vedova da due anni
Cheryl donna in carriera divorziata
Doris casalinga

Review
Doris, Cheryl and Jackie are three forties friends, through thick and thin, ever  since high school.
Jackie has lost her husband two years ago, muche bigger than her well-off. To overcome the trauma departs for Paris to become a famous painter but ends with to squander her inheritance. Without money it is forced to return home where she is hosted by Doris. Cheryl is a career woman who has devoted her life to work  and after the divorce she is granted only adventures. Due to an accident playing to squash, her boss comes to knowledge of some compromising documents and is dismissed. Doris is a depressed housewife because she has not yet overcome the loss of her mother yet, has a bad relationship with her daughter Mandy and discovers that her husband Doug betrays her.
One night to amuse travel to Chicago at a strip club and them is their idea to open a restaurant, Sex & Fashion Restaurant waiters with little clothing. Among scarce economic resources, large and small quarrels able to reach the day of the inauguration.
The story is told in the third person alternating between the various points of view of three friends and there are many flashbacks that allow us to learn about the birth of their friendship and all the events that brought them to be what they are now.
It 's a beautiful story of friendship, reading a very funny and entertaining, it is sliding it said in a couple of afternoons, to spend some time relaxing.

Personaggi
 Holden Caulfield protagonista sedicenne

..............
Review
The story takes place over two days: Saturday to Pencey begins and ends on Monday in New York. The center of the novel is Holden's rebellion to the American bourgeois society after World War II: false, hypocritical, conformist and intolerant. Through his stories show his anger, his discomfort, his loneliness and his depression also. In this world "sucks" the only person to be saved is the old Phoebe, his little sister wise: it is very nice to the relationship she has with her beautiful one of the final scenes in the park. Something special is also the story "of love" with Jane, in particular their exits hand in hand.
The story is told in the first person by Holden then the author has tried to use a language full of typical teenage, etc., etc., Vattelapesca .... : An original choice but definitely very annoying.
Overall, the book is very smooth, it is an enjoyable read, perfect for the age of adolescence, after perhaps it is more difficult to empathize with the protagonist.
But where do the ducks go in the winter when the lake becomes frozen? ..............
